UN calls for end to crackdown on democrats in Myanmar
The United Nations has called for an end to crackdowns on democrats in Myanmar.
A spokesman for High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said security forces’ crackdown on protesters was reprehensible. Stop cracking down on peaceful protesters. More than 1,700 people, including journalists arrested during the crackdown, should be released immediately. All those arrested illegally should be released.
Myanmar’s military junta is busy firing on its own people to seize power. Demonstrations began across the country, including in Yangon. Tear gas shelling, direct firing and baton charges on protesters have become commonplace, killing more than 50 people so far. Despite the use of state force and drastic military action, the people of Myanmar are refusing to accept a military coup.
