England v India Ollie Pope and Chris Woakes star on hard-fought day
Despite a hard-fought day, England came out on top with Ollie Pope and Chris Woakes making key contributions.
England v India was one of the most closely fought games in recent times as both teams gave their all to take home this win from the Lords Cricket Ground. In what turned into an exciting final session, neither team would give way until Adil Rashid broke through Jasprit Bumrah’s defenses at 94th over for a well-earned wicket after his 21 overs went without yielding any runs which kept England chasing throughout its innings before eventually running down 252 thanks to strong performances by opener Rory Burns (81) and number three batsman Joe Denly who made 79*. For India batting had been difficult early on as the English seamers bowled a tight line throughout and rarely gave anything away. In response, India came out as early as the fourth over as KL Rahul smacked Woakes for two fours before getting caught behind by Pope to put England on top. Mohammad Shami (1/51) got things moving quickly at the other end taking number three batsman Ollie Pope (38) with a short ball to have them 21-2.
