Talking to media on the sidelines of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s visit to Sri Lanka, Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that our bilateral relations with Sri Lanka have always been very good. We are in harmony in international forums, including the United Nations and the Human Rights Council. The first country we signed an FTA with was Sri Lanka. Despite this, our bilateral trade remained limited.
“During this visit to Sri Lanka, we had a detailed discussion on the promotion of economic cooperation with Sri Lanka,” he said. We discussed increasing bilateral trade and investment. We will also discuss the development of bilateral economic ties and trade relations at the Business Council meeting. There are ample opportunities to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the field of tourism promotion.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi further said that defense and security cooperation are of equal importance to us in tackling the scourge of terrorism. We continue to work together on counter-terrorism, information exchange, capacity building and training. We are cooperating with Sri Lanka on the playing field. We plan to build a cultural center at the ancient University of Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Imran Khan’s meeting with his Sri Lankan counterpart and delegation-level talks were very useful.
